The Elephant Whisperers - Short Film Review

The Elephant Whisperers is a beautiful, Oscar winning documentary by Kartiki Gonsalves. It is set at Tamil Nadu's Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. Theppakadu Elephant Camp, a 140-year-old elephant camp located within the Tiger Reserve, which is responsible for caring for orphaned elephants.

The story begins with Raghu, an orphaned baby elephant who is entrusted into the care of a man named Bomman and a woman named Bellie. The documentary tells us how overtime as the two keep caring for Raghu as if he was their own child, they form a family. Soon they find that another elephant calf gets entrusted into their care whose name is Ammukutty.

When their family seems to be finally happy, tragedy strikes. They find out that in a few days Raghu is to be entrusted to another caretaker. Although depressed, they feel happy that they can always see and visit him. We hear that their little family is proud to have been the first to successfully raise two elephant babies in south india.

I really like this documentary because it demonstrates the relationship between man and nature. We hear the couple saying that “ we respect the forest and take only those things from the forest that are absolutely essential to us”, and this is a lesson that must be learned by all. The picturisation of the documentary is extremely beautiful and every scene is breathtaking. It has wonderful cinematography. The entire documentary is narrated by Bomman and Bellie and includes their heart touching feelings. Simplistic, heartful and proud Indian documentary , it is a must see for all.
